Herold Oleksandrovych was born on July 7, 1929 in Khabarovsk in the family of a military serviceman. He dreamed of becoming a sailor, so after finishing seventh grade in 1944 entered the Odessa Junior School. A year later, he graduated and started his dream job: for more than 5 years he was a sailor, stoker and driver on merchant vessels of the Black Sea Shipping Company.
During 1950–1987 H.O. Antselevich served in the Navy of the USSR, retired with the rank of captain of the 1st rank.
While sailing on merchant ships and serving on military ships, he took part in a round-the-world trip through the Panama Canal, went around Europe, to Indonesia. Visited the ports of more than twenty countries of the world.
In 1970 defended his candidate's thesis in 1973. he was awarded the academic title of associate professor, and in 2006 — academic title of professor.
Since 1993 after 1996 Gerold Oleksandrovych worked as an adviser on international maritime law at the National Agency for Maritime Research and Technologies under the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (the agency was the central body of the state executive power) and took an active part in shaping the concept of the National Research Program project and the use of the resources of the Azov-Black Sea basin and other areas of the World Ocean for the period up to 2000 (hereinafter - the National Program), which was approved by the Decree of the President of Ukraine in December 1993.
In the future, Herold Oleksandrovych not only coordinated the implementation of legal projects of the National Program, he focused his efforts on scientific and organizational activities on the development of the foundations of the national legal system for the regulation of maritime activities, the use of the resources of the Azov-Black Sea basin, other regions of the World Ocean, as well as theoretical and applied developments within the framework of three interrelated blocks, such as: international norms, economic law, international agreements.
As a recognized specialist in international maritime law, with many years of experience and thorough knowledge, G.O. Antselevich was invited to the post of arbitrator in the Maritime Arbitration Commission at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Ukraine; he was also an expert of the Contract Law Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on the Azov-Black Sea Basin.
Since 1996 by 2020 Herold Oleksandrovych worked as a teacher in higher education institutions as an associate professor and professor: in 1998 headed the department of international law at the Ukrainian State University of Finance and International Trade.
For a long time he cooperated with the department of international law and comparative jurisprudence of the Institute of State and Law named after V.M. Koretsky National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on international maritime law, international private maritime law, national maritime legislation.
His scientific achievements are embodied in numerous printed works, monographs, textbooks and educational and methodological manuals, including: "Modern international maritime law and the practice of its application by Ukraine", "International legal regime for the use of research vessels", "Antarctica: history, modernity, prospects", "Seafaring: international legal aspects" etc.
We are saddened that such an outstanding scientist, our beloved teacher, a sensitive, kind, sincere person has passed away. For many years, he encouraged the scientific work of students by his example and outlined the orientations of scientific goals for them; sowed good and eternal in the soul of every person. The students sincerely respected Herold Oleksandrovych for his attentiveness to their aspirations and beliefs, delicacy and modesty, understanding and wise support. Professor Gerold Oleksandrovych was a talented scientist, a humane and tolerant leader, a benevolent person who is always ready to help.
He was respected as an experienced teacher, demanding and patient mentor of youth. Herold Oleksandrovych lived a long, bright and eventful life full of achievements, leaving behind the fruits of good deeds, invariably filling with enthusiasm everyone who was lucky enough to learn from him, work with him and communicate with him.
We will keep a living, bright memory of him in our hearts.
