Democracy and legal aspects of ensuring just peace and international security
September 20, 2024 at the Institute of State and Law named after V.M. Koretsky, a round table was held for the International Day of Democracy on the topic: "Democracy and legal aspects of ensuring just peace and international security".
The event was organized by the Institute of State and Law named after V.M. Koretsky of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine together with the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine and the public organization of scientists "Women's Tribune".
More than 60 representatives took part in the work of the round table, including scientists of the Institute, people's deputies of Ukraine, judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, judges of local general courts, professors and teachers of higher education institutions of Ukraine, representatives of domestic institutions of civil society.

The work of the round table was devoted to the discussion of questions regarding the importance of democracy in the system of universal human values; democratic changes in the system of human rights in conditions of war; the human right to peace in the context of the modern law of state formation; the role and prospects of forming legal culture and legal consciousness in the conditions of globalization and their challenges.
Moderator – Inna Silantieva, researcher at the Institute of State and Law named after V.M. Koretskyi of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, member of the Secretariat of the Public Council under the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on humanitarian and information policy, vice-president of the NGO "Tribune of Women".
The scientific event was started with a welcome speech by Oleksandr Skrypnyuk, vice-president of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, director of the Institute of State and Law named after V.M. Koretsky of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the head of the competitive commission for the selection of candidates for the position of judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine according to the quota of the President of Ukraine. Aleksandr Skrypnyuk, in particular, noted that the main goal of the International Day of Democracy — draw attention to global challenges in areas such as peacekeeping, human rights, climate change, ensuring justice, access to education, and empowering the next generation.However, the main goal of this day is to draw attention to how valuable freedom of thought and observance of human rights are for every citizen. The speaker emphasized that the modern Ukrainian state is democratic according to all the main formal and legal features: the Constitution of Ukraine of 1996, the electoral law and the electoral system generally meet the criteria of the state. But democracy in Ukraine is not yet effective, it has not become a means and a mechanism for humanizing life.Today, Ukraine, as Oleksandr Skrypniuk emphasized, — defends its democracy and freedom every day in a brutal war with the Russian occupiers. And he will win, because this war with the Russian Federation is a threat not only to our democracy, but also to the whole world. "Tasks of scientists — to make an intellectual contribution to this struggle and victory, to the protection and development of democracy.Institute of State and Law named after V.M. The discussion was attended by Oksana Dmytrieva, Deputy Chairman of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on National Health, Medical Assistance and Medical Insurance, People's Deputy of Ukraine, Honored Doctor of Ukraine; Natalia Onishchenko, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, deputy director for scientific work of the Institute of State and Law named after V.M. Koretskyi of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, doctor of legal sciences, professor, president of the NGO «Women's Tribune"; Oleksandr Petryshyn, judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, doctor of legal sciences; Marina Bulkat, doctor of legal sciences, professor, scientific consultant of the Department of Analytical and Legal Work of the Supreme Court, member of the board of the NGO "Tribune of Women"; Mykola Mykytyuk, doctor of legal sciences, professor of the Institute of State Security of Ukraine of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, colonel; Serhiy Zhadan, deputy of the Vyshgorod City Council; Iryna Soloshenko, head of the project for the evacuation of wounded BF KOLO; Serhiy Bizov, Head of the All-Ukrainian Trade Union of Defenders of Ukraine, Sportsmen and Workers in the Fields, serviceman of the 12th brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine.
In their speeches, the participants of the event emphasized that in the context of the development of democracy in Ukraine in the conditions of war, special attention should be paid to the establishment of communication between sectors of civil society.
Based on the results of the round table, recommendations were adopted.
